Why You're Still Sick: Release the Belief | Katie Ruffino

Intro summary

Why are some people still sick after years of doctors, labs and protocols? Katie Ruffino, PA-C, NLP Master Practitioner and founder of Sunnysidekt, explains how secondary gain and old beliefs can keep the body stuck, and how she uses NLP and Mental Emotional Release to help clear them.

Katie spent her early career in a regenerative medicine clinic doing stem cells, PRP, peptides and IVs. She noticed the same treatment changed one patient's life and did nothing for the next. Her read: for many people the block isn't only physical. It's an unprocessed emotion, a belief formed in childhood, or a "secondary gain" from being sick that they haven't faced. In her words: "the more they resist the lesson, the longer they will suffer."

I share my own Lyme and brain-calcification story and why my HTMA clients who already have mindset tools (breathwork, meditation, yoga) tend to release heavy metals faster. We also cover diagnosis as identity, why "bad luck" is often a pattern, parts integration, double dissociation for phobias, the NLP allergy model, numbing with alcohol, cannabis and phones, and what Katie learned from Dr. Steve Young: treating people as problems to solve keeps creating problems. This one is for anyone who has done "all the right things" and still feels stuck: one foot in the emotional, one foot in the physical.

Key takeaways

  • A treatment that works for one person can do nothing for the next. Katie saw this with stem cells and peptides, and looks for the unprocessed emotion or belief behind the case.

  • A diagnosis can become an identity ("I'm a Lyme patient"), and every struggle can carry a secondary gain (attention, support, an excuse to avoid something scary). Naming it without shame is the first step.

  • Mental Emotional Release finds the core "I am" belief, then releases anger, fear, sadness, hurt and guilt back to the event where it formed. Katie says relief can come in a single session.

  • My clinical observation: HTMA clients who already do breathwork, meditation or yoga release heavy metals and toxic copper faster.

  • Two people can live the same event and take opposite meanings from it. Perception, not the event, drives the story you carry forward.

  • Katie's four requisites to change: release, set a clear goal, take aligned action, and keep believing it's possible.

  • Treating people as problems to solve keeps you in the energy of problem-solving. Sometimes less is more: rest and safety can be part of the protocol.

FAQ

What is secondary gain in chronic illness? Katie describes it as a hidden benefit of staying sick, such as attention, financial support, or an excuse to avoid a scary goal. It can keep someone from fully letting go of the struggle.

What is Mental Emotional Release (MER)? An NLP process, previously called Timeline Therapy, that finds a core belief like "I'm not worthy" and releases the anger, fear, sadness, hurt and guilt connected to it back to the event where it first formed.

Why do clients with mindset tools detox faster? Matthew sees it in his HTMA clients. Katie's view: when the nervous system is less braced and emotions are allowed to move, lymph and fascia flow better and the body can let toxins go.

Who is Katie Ruffino? Katie (Catherine) Ruffino, PA-C, MPAS, is a board-certified physician assistant and NLP Master Practitioner in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the founder of Sunnysidekt. She uses NLP, Mental Emotional Release and nervous-system work to help clients and clinic teams clear the beliefs that keep the body from healing.
