Low Ferritin? Try Lactoferrin Before Iron | Jeff Hoyt
Low Ferritin? Try Lactoferrin Before Iron | Jeff Hoyt
Intro summary
Low ferritin doesn't always mean you need more iron. Jeff Hoyt, founder of Zeolite Labs and host of The Detox Experience, returns to Integrative Thoughts to explain lactoferrin, the iron-binding protein your body already makes to grab iron and move it where it's needed.
Jeff's point is that a lot of iron trouble isn't about how much iron comes in, it's about what happens after: whether cells can use and transport it, or whether microbes and biofilms are taking it. That's why an iron supplement can backfire, and why low ferritin can be a defense. Lactoferrin can help raise low iron or move excess iron out, which is why Jeff likes it as a first line for iron problems.
We also cover iron overload after 50, gut, immune and LPS benefits, colostrum vs lactoferrin, and the difference between bovine lactoferrin and human-identical, dairy-free lactoferrin (effera®) made by precision fermentation, including the GMO question. Jeff walks through AloeFerrin vs Dairy-Free Lactoferrin, dosing on an empty stomach, why he'd give it a three-month trial against your ferritin, and where binders like ZeoCharge and chlorella fit.

Meet the guest
Jeff Hoyt has worked in supplement and nutraceutical development for about ten years, after getting into functional medicine and biohacking for his own health. He founded Zeolite Labs around its zeolite binder, ZeoCharge, focuses on ingredient quality and therapeutic dosing, and hosts The Detox Experience podcast. He first sold a lactoferrin supplement about nine years ago. His first Integrative Thoughts episode (Nov 2023) covered the higher-dose theory of zeolite.

Key takeaways
Iron trouble is often about what happens after iron gets in: absorption, use and transport.
If low iron comes from poor absorption or use, an iron supplement can feed microbes instead of you.
Free iron is reactive and can drive oxidative stress, so moving it matters as much as adding it.
Lactoferrin binds iron and shuttles it, which is why it can help raise low iron or clear excess.
Jeff treats lactoferrin as a first line for iron problems because it works with the body's own process.
After 50, many people shift from iron deficiency toward iron overload.
Jeff takes it on an empty stomach (morning and about 30 minutes before dinner) and suggests giving it about three months, checked against ferritin.

Quotes
"A lot of the issue with iron, it's not necessarily the total amount of iron coming into the body, it's what's happening after it's there." (Jeff Hoyt)
"If the reason that you're low in iron is because your body's not absorbing or utilizing it, you're basically just feeding the microbes at that point." (Jeff Hoyt)
"I like lactoferrin kind of as a first line of defense, especially with iron issues." (Jeff Hoyt)
"I would give it like a give it a three month shot." (Jeff Hoyt)

FAQ
What is lactoferrin? An iron-binding protein the body already makes. It grabs iron and helps transport it where it's needed, which is why it can help raise low iron or move excess iron out.
Why try lactoferrin before an iron supplement? Jeff's view is that low iron is often an absorption or transport problem. In that case extra iron can feed microbes and add oxidative stress, while lactoferrin works with the body's own iron handling.
What's the difference between bovine and dairy-free lactoferrin? Bovine lactoferrin is extracted from cow's milk. The dairy-free version (effera® by Helaina) is human-identical lactoferrin made by precision fermentation, the same approach used to make insulin, so it suits people who react to dairy.
How long should you take lactoferrin? Jeff suggests giving it about three months and checking ferritin, though he's seen ferritin rise in about a month for some people.
