HTMA & Heavy Metals with Biohacker Babes: Minerals Explained

Intro summary

Blood mineral panels are a same-day snapshot. HTMA reads a multi-month cellular pattern—and that difference changes how you supplement, detox, and interpret highs and lows. On this Integrative Thoughts episode, Matthew Coffman joins Renee Belz and Lauren Sambataro of the Biohacker Babes (Matt on their mic, packaged for ITP listeners) to unpack hair tissue mineral analysis, copper–zinc dynamics, heavy metals, oxidation types, and why just take what you are low in fails so often.

[5:13] Matt cold open — opposite end of the mic

Matthew frames the cross-post: friends at Biohacker Babes, community love, Hack Your Health crossover, and an HTMA/heavy-metals conversation for ITP listeners.

[5:55] Welcome Matthew to Biohacker Babes

Renee and Lauren welcome Matt after following his mineral work for over a year.

[6:28] HTMA vs serum / blood testing

Blood as snapshot (stress, sleep, drinks); calcium leaching to keep serum normal; HTMA as cellular biopsy / ~3-month average; sampling near the skull base; synergistic mineral + B-vitamin + organotherapy programs.

[10:30] Why minerals matter

Pleiotropic effects—structure, enzymes, immunity, neurotransmitters—one deficiency, many faces.

[13:13] Minerals vs electrolyte powders

LMNT-style powders help sweat/low-carb but do not rewrite HTMA the way targeted zinc / Na-K complexes can.

[15:16] How to supplement from HTMA

Common high Ca/Mg + low Na pattern; soft-tissue calcification; sodium as adrenal marker; cortisol via potassium—not just eat bananas.

[18:14] Vegetarian/vegan mineral gaps

Copper-rich plants + low zinc → copper toxicity patterns; kids on plant-heavy diets.

[19:28] Calcium, copper & calcification

Why demonizing calcium misses utilization; free vs bound copper questions.

[22:44] Heavy metal excretion

Seafood mercury patterns; environmental/geoengineering burden; excretion vs retention.

[27:31] Oligoscan vs HTMA

Complementary tools; hair does not catch every metal; low metals ≠ none stored.

[34:39] Fast vs slow oxidation

Diet and nutrient strategy by oxidation type; carbs, protein, calming substances.

[45:15] Metals, parasites, yeast & SIBO

Bugs feeding on metals; parasite cleanses without capacity can redistribute toxins.

[47:25]–[49:14] Alcohol & the war on zinc

Zinc for alcohol clearance; mercury as historical zinc diuretic; food-only zinc often insufficient.

[52:59] Matt healing journey

Personal adversity → mineral balancing authority and practitioner path.

[57:09] Fulvic & humic acids

Where they fit (and do not) beside foundational minerals.

[59:07] Mood & mental health

Calcium, zinc, chromium research; mercury on NMDA receptors; copper/manganese.

[1:01:57] Minerals in kids

Autism/OCD-adjacent responses; picky eating improving as zinc rises and metals clear.

[1:11:11] Paraxanthine & coffee

Coffee sensitivity after healing; cleaner stimulant interest.

[1:13:12] Final advice & close

Key takeaways (scannable)

  1. Treat HTMA as a trend, not a grocery list of deficiencies.

  2. Serum minerals can lie via homeostasis.

  3. High on the chart can mean unused—not do not supplement.

  4. Electrolyte packets ≠ full mineral balancing.

  5. Copper–zinc balance is a vegetarian/vegan landmine.

  6. Metals and microbes co-travel—forceful cleanses can backfire.

  7. Zinc demand is higher than most diets supply in 2025.

  8. Kids and mood often move when minerals and metals do.

FAQ

What is HTMA and how is it different from a blood mineral test?

HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) looks at mineral and heavy-metal patterns in hair cut near the scalp—roughly a multi-month average as hair grows. Blood mineral panels are useful for some markers but are a short snapshot; the body will often leach minerals (e.g., calcium from bone) to keep serum in range, so normal blood minerals can hide cellular imbalance.

Why should not I just supplement whatever is low on my HTMA?

Many high readings reflect minerals that are not being utilized (for example soft-tissue calcification with high calcium). Sodium on hair often tracks adrenal function more than dietary salt. Blindly replacing lows ignores ratios and second-order effects—zinc, copper, and manganese moves can shift potassium and sodium patterns. Work with someone who reads the full chart.

Do parasite cleanses help if I have heavy metals?

Not automatically. Matt notes parasites and other overgrowths can feed on metals; killing them without drainage and capacity may redistribute toxins and make people feel worse. Mineral balancing and practitioner-guided sequencing matter more than a random cleanse kit.
